Brasiliopuntia brasiliensis
A. Berger 1926

Etymology: Brazilian Opuntia. Although it may be found in neighboring countries.
Place of Origin: Southern edge of Brazil, northern Argentina, Peru, and Bolivia.

One of the most peculiar opuntioid species. Very popular in nurseries during the 1980s, it has curiously disappeared from commercial sale. Plants consist of one or several well-defined vertical cylindrical trunks and small, very thin paddle-shaped segments that gradually detach over time, remaining only on the upper part of the plant.

What makes this plant special?

This is undoubtedly a beautiful plant to have in any garden. Initially, it resembles a small Opuntia, but later a small vertical trunk develops, causing the lower paddle-shaped segments to gradually dry out and fall off while new ones emerge at the top of the plant. Given adequate soil and space, it can grow several meters tall. It produces abundant yellow blooms that can nearly cover the entire plant. The fruit is small and somewhat dry, making it not particularly worthwhile to eat (though it is edible).

Cultivation

It is very easy to grow. It can be propagated by seeds or cuttings, although the latter is much easier. It tolerates almost any watering frequency and benefits from fertilization. Be careful: it cannot tolerate cold and suffers serious damage below 0°C. It also does not tolerate waterlogged soil.
